You Will Avoid the Data Dump Blues

A common problem for many people is that they’re perfectly fine speaking friends family colleagues one on one conversations in the office or with the boss.

But when they have to stand up to give that official briefing or that formal speech I’m on my own.

That’s when all the arms come out.

The problem is the way they’ve structured their presentation.

They have a way too much data.

They’re trying to cover every single little fact in an abstract way devoid of context.

Think of it this way if you bump into a colleague Monday morning and they ask how was your weekend.

You’re likely to say oh it was fine.

We went to and then you talk about one example of something interesting you did but imagine if someone said How was your weekend.

And you had to say well at 6 or 1 on Saturday morning I woke up at 6 0 2 I got up and went to the bathroom at 6 0 3 I went and bought coffee at 6 0 4.

I mean that would be nerve wracking.

Anyone would have the US and arms come out trying to remember sequence day part after day part.

Minute by minute that puts too much pressure on the brain and also frankly bores your audience to death.

So one of the things that will eliminate the US in arms coming out of your presentation is getting rid of the boring data dump.

Instead you need to narrow your messages down to the top five.

And if you’re giving an hour long presentation.

If you’re just rattling off fact after fact that’s only us and ums are going to come out.

It’s going to make you look uncomfortable unprofessional and it’s frankly going to bore everyone else to death.

So narrow your messages down you got a whole lot of data handed out email that don’t try to remember it and say it all in front of people.
