Slash

This punctuation lesson is all about the slash.

Slashes shown here in brackets are sometimes called forward slashes in order to avoid confusion with a backslash again shown in brackets.

Which is really only used in computers a slash is also technically known as a verb Google and they can be used in place of or will be used in place of her when showing rates.

We usually use a dash instead.

For example the 2008 2009 season was decided well before the last game.

So here we’re talking about 2008 and 2009.

So we just write 2008 slash 9 and then it’s clear we’re talking about those two years or rather the one year season spanning those two years.

They were at university together in the 1985 86 academic year of the academic year goes from September to August.

It always spans two calendar years that we could in this case have written 85 slash six but we chose to write 85 slash 86 to make it a bit clearer if they were together for a longer period of time.

We would say they were at university together between 1985 to 89.

This is a greater than two year span.

So were you we prefer a dash rather than a slash slash is also used for certain common abbreviations.

It is however not recommended for use in formal writing or what this means is.

I haven’t seen a black and white television for a long time So television is abbreviated to TV which is a common abbreviation and in black and white has been abbreviated to be slash W and we would write it like this.

Now in this case the C slash O stands for care of and you can write this on a an envelope that you addressed to a company

or the other common thing you might see is the shop is open 24/7.

That means it never closes and 24/7 here stands for 24 hours a day seven days a week.
