Be Entertaining

When you’re giving an acceptance speech especially if it’s for anything to do with something in the Arts an Oscar can the Academy Awards the Emmys the Tonys.

Anything in the creative fields.

Keep in mind you’re an entertainer.

So something in your acceptance speech should be entertaining.

Now ideally it’s funny but if it’s not funny at least a dramatic moment something with a little emotion it’s always disappointing when people who are known as world class entertainers and they get up to give an acceptance speech and they seem about as entertaining as if an accountant were reading the phone book to you.

Or the latest IRS regulation change.

Remember who you are.

Whatever your strengths are.

Use those trite display those strengths.

So if you are anything in the entertainment field use this to entertain.

Now you’re not going to give a humorous speech and be Garrison Keillor for an hour but you do have a minute where you can say at least something amusing interesting entertaining so plan on having something entertaining even if you’re just making fun of yourself.

Remember for a lot of people who give acceptance speeches more people are watching the acceptance speech than will ever see your movie or your video or your Broadway show.

So people often have it backwards.

They think I’m going to rehearse.

Hour after hour after hour for months from my Broadway show which two people see a night and now I’m going to be on the Tonys on CBS.

Millions of people are going to see and I’m just gonna wait.

Now give it the time and effort and energy to create an entertaining moment.

So something in your acceptance speech needs to be entertaining.
