Kids Communication Goals

The first thing you did before any public speech and by the way I’m going to use the term public speaking presentation giving a presentation giving a talk giving a book report.

It’s really.

Anytime you’re talking to someone and you’re trying to convey specific information.

It’s not just talking about something you saw on TV or phone or a game but you’re talking in order to communicate something.

It could be a large group it could be three people but it’s not just social chatter.

So that’s what I mean.

So you may be giving a book report and sitting down in front of six classmates.

That’s still a type of public speaking it’s a type of presentation.

So the first thing you’ve got to do before any presentation you give whether it’s asking for allowance or giving a book report on Davy Crockett is you’ve got to really figure out what are your goals.

If you’re asking for allowance it’s very specific.

You want that additional amount of money every single week.

If it’s a book report your goals may be more general you want people to know a lot of interesting things about Davy Crockett and you want the teacher to be impressed by you.

And you want a good grade.

But whatever it is you need to go into every single presentation with a specific goal in mind.

So that’s my first bit of homework for you.

I need you to come up with something that you’re going to practice on in this course.

It could be a purely academic report that you have to give in class next week.

It could be you just making the case to your parents as to why you want the next family vacation to be Disney World.

It’s completely up to you.

But I want you to think of the topic you want to discuss.

And then I want you to focus on the exact goal you have the outcome you want from this presentation.

So let’s think of it and let’s write it down now.
