First Conditional - Promises and Threats

This lecture looked at the first conditional we look at when to use it how it is formed and we give some examples.

so we use the first conditional to refer to possible or probable conditions and their likely results.

They often used to give promises or warnings.

This is the format of the first conditional if plus simple present and simple future.

So if this happens this will happen.

Note that all conditionals the main and if clauses are not fixed and they can be swapped but please pay attention to pronouns and punctuation have some examples to make realistic predictions if he dropped the glass it will break and this is fairly clear.

Normally you drop a glass it lands on the hard floor and shatters if my team loses I will be angry well if my team loses I might lose they might win.

If they do lose it seems an option I won’t be happy.

If it rains tomorrow I will take an umbrella.

Well it’s quite likely that it might rain tomorrow and if it does I’ll take an umbrella with me.

So it promises or warnings if you cook the meal I’ll wash the dishes so like a promise you know you do the work beforehand.

I’ll do the work afterwards or as a type of warning.

If you don’t pay the invoice I’ll take you to court.

So it’s quite likely that they won’t pay the invoice and if they don’t pay it then we’ll go to court and the last one back to a sort of promise again.

If you reduce the price by 10 percent I’ll buy the kitchen today so they’re saying like look it’s a bit expensive take 10 percent off and I’ll buy it now.
