Independent Body Sample (Structure B)
Okay. Now that we’ve talked about Structure A and Structure B, let’s see a sample of structure B in your independent essay. Remember that the only thing different is the body paragraphs, so we’re just looking at body paragraphs in this video. We need our sample question which we’ve used before.
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? We’re talking about print media, magazines and newspapers. And I disagree in my essay. As in all the other videos. Now, what am I going to do in this body paragraph? I’ll state a reason, I’ll explain that reason, only if you need to, and then I’ll give a concrete example or detail.
Maybe more than one. Of course, this is the most important part in many ways. Remember to pick your stronger reason here. I’m going to pick my second reason from the previous sample body paragraphs from Sample Structure A. That is, I’m going to use my reason that print media is more relaxing.
That’s my stronger reason, it’s the one I have more ideas about. So that’s what is here. You’ll notice that this paragraph is different than in Structure A, because I need to add more detail to make it work. Let’s see what I mean by that. Here’s my first sentence.
Print news sources will always have customers because they’re naturally relaxing. Okay, here is my reason why I disagree that print media will disappear. It’s pretty general. No specifics. When we read newspapers or magazines, we don’t talk to anyone.
This is a little bit of explanation. You might call this a detail or an example, but it’s a very, very light detail. It’s not very specific. So, we need to get more specific, and the next few sentences will really give details.
This is what we need. In order to focus on the articles, we have to keep out the world around us. We read them in relaxing places, during quiet times, such as on the couch at home, over breakfast, or on a subway train while commuting. During those times, we can’t think about work or school or other obligations, so print media helps us to escape.
Okay, these details, these specifics are used to explain this idea. Which connects back to this sentence, here. As I said, I have to give more detail here. And talk more about the idea that it’s relaxing than I did in Structure A. When I talked about relaxation in Structure A, I was able to talk a little bit about the internet and the internet being stressful.
But, for this type of structure, I can’t do that in my first body paragraph. Because that is my second body paragraph. So instead, I have to stay on the topic of newspapers and give lots of detail about newspapers. Then I move on to Body Paragraph 2. Now I’ll talk about the opposite of newspapers, the internet.
So I give my opposite of the first reason. Newspapers are relaxing and the internet is stressful. To do that I will need a transition word, remember that, and then I’ll give concrete details just like I did in my previous paragraph and return to my main point. Let’s see it. Take a couple of minutes to read this, pause the video.
And when you hit play again, we will talk about the functions of the different sentences. Okay, when you’re finished reading. Let’s look at each sentence. New technology, on the other hand, is actually the opposite of an escape.
Now this is just my reason, just the general idea. It’s the opposite of my first reason, right? Next sentence. When we use smartphones or computers, we are immediately connected to all of our responsibilities and relationships. Okay. This gives some more detail.
You might call it an explanation, possibly of my reason. It, tells why it is the opposite of an escape. What do I mean? Well, there are responsibilities and relationships which are not an escape, but it’s not very specific yet. The next sentence is more specific.
For many people, work, school, bank accounts, bills, and other sources of stress are all online. When we use the internet, even if we are reading news, we are very connected. Okay, so now we have our details. Our examples. This can be stressful, so many people prefer not to use technology for reading.
If people want to relax while they read, they will want print media. This is returning to my original main idea. And, it’s very, very strong here. Thus, magazines and newspapers will not disappear. That’s supposed to be underlined. That’s the main idea very, very clear at the end of my second body paragraph.
All right, now you try it.
