Task 1 - Sample Answers

All right. In this video, I’m going to give you some sample answers for speaking task one, so you can hear what you should try to do in your speaking. First, let’s think about the notes. Remember that you only have 15 seconds for your notes. It’s very, very short, so you’ll have very short notes.

Here’s our question. Choose a place in your home that you enjoy spending time in. Explain why you like it. Now, if I only take 15 seconds to think about that question, and write some notes, I’ll only get a few words down. Let’s start 15 seconds now.

And stop. Now, that was very quick, and I only wrote one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine letters. That’s great. It’s very, very short notes.

But, I have some ideas. My bedroom is where I’m going to talk about, I’m going to choose it because it’s relaxing. I like spending time there and I like the decorations. Now this is actually not true. But who cares?

It doesn’t matter. It’s a lie. I’m going to lie. I have some reasons and I’m going to talk about them. And I can show that I can describe my bedroom and give reasons and that’s what matters.

Let’s hear the actual answer. I’m willing to give myself 45, sorry, 45 seconds to speak, of course, which is a very short time. Let’s start those 45 seconds now. In all of the places in my apartment, I think the one that I enjoy the most is my bedroom.

It’s a very relaxing place. I have a very comfortable bed that I, of course, really enjoy sleeping in. It’s a great place to read, and to just wind down at the end of a day. Besides that I’ve spent a lot of money and time decorating that room, there’s a lot of posters and a framed picture on the walls and everything matches. It’s all color coordinated in a very neat and personalized way.

It really feels like me. Stop. Okay. Now, that is an ideal answer. Your answer might be a little bit different. Why is it ideal?

Well, it was structured. It was very clear. I gave which room, and I gave two clear reasons. And it used some more advanced English. I used the phrasal verb wind down, that means something like relax. I also said that the room feels like me.

This is a little idiomatic, a little slang, more natural speech. If you can work in some phrasal verbs and some idioms and some natural speech, then you can show that you’re a comfortable English speaker, and that will help you a lot. Let’s try another sample answer.

This time I’m going to do the 15 seconds of notes, and the 45 seconds of speaking. All at one time, I’m not going to talk in between them. First, let’s read our question. Name a person who you feel has affected your life positively. Give reasons and examples to explain your answer. Okay.

I’ll have 15 seconds to respond, starting, sorry, to prepare, starting now. And stop. Okay. Now, I will have 45 seconds to give my answer, beginning now.

In my life, of course, I’ve had many very influential people. But I think my father has probably had the most positive effect on me. He’s given me a lot of advice in my life and helped me make a lot of important decisions. He helped me choose my college, helped me applying for jobs, when I needed my first job and has even had opinions about my girlfriends.

He, he’s helped me choose what’s best for me. And when I was young, as a child, he, like most parents, helped me to develop morality. Helped me to understand right a wrong, not to steal, not to hurt people, and things like that. Stop.

Okay. So, I didn’t quite finish. Did you notice this second detail was a little under developed? It was a little less detailed? Well that’s okay. I gave clear reasons, and I explained myself through some specifics.

I gave more than just I think my dad has been important and he is a very good dad. And he has been very, very helpful for me. Well, I talked about colleges, I talked about jobs, I talked about my girlfriends. I’d mentioned stealing and hurting people. These are more specific, concrete details.

That’s what you need. Even if the structure isn’t perfect, even if you spend too much time on one detail and not enough time on another detail, that’s okay. Now, it’s your turn. Pause this video, and try to answer this question. Remember, give yourself 15 seconds to prepare, and 45 seconds to speak.

Time yourself. Use a stopwatch or use a clock online, on your computer, anything. But make sure you time yourself. That’s an important part of the task. Thank you.
