Task 2 - Sample Answers

Okay. Let’s hear some example answers. Some sample answers for speaking task number two. Again, this is the independent task where you choose between two options and explain your choice. Notes will be as is true for both independent tasks.

Very short. You’ll only have 15 seconds to make your choice, think of reasons, and write any notes. Let’s try that. I’ll give myself 15 seconds to write some notes for this question. When some people travel, they prefer to visit warmer places, while others prefer to visit colder areas.

Which do you prefer and why? And I’ll have 15 seconds starting now. Stop. Okay.

So I have two reasons here. This is the beach. Maybe I enjoy swimming, I like going to the beach. And this one is that it’s more relaxing. Now, this first one is a much better answer, a much better detail. So I might spend more time on that one.

The second one is something that’s going to be a little harder to explain, and maybe isn’t as clear as the first one. Maybe it’s actually part of the first one. I enjoy a relaxing on the beach, but if I have extra time, I can try to talk about this too, if I finish talking about the beach. All right.

Let’s try it. I’m going to have 45 seconds to answer the question. Starting now. When I travel, I, I usually try to go to warmer places. That’s probably because I enjoy going to the beach. And if, if I’m traveling that means I’m not working, I’m on vacation, and I want to relax and, I, I really enjoy relaxing at the beach.

Swimming, and the ocean, and the feel of open sky, and warm sun, and all of the people around me also relaxing is just very, very pleasant and, it’s very natural for me. So, I try to go somewhere that allows for that, that experience at the beach, because travel should be relaxing for me. Stop.

Okay. So that was 45 seconds, and I only really talked about the beach. That’s okay, because it still answered the question. I prefer to go to warmer places for a very specific reason and I gave some more details of that reason. It was a little dangerous.

I almost changed topics. I almost started talking only about the beach, and not about travel. But in the end, I came back to the idea of travel is relaxing, and tied that together with the beach. And that made it okay. I didn’t really use my idea of a second reason, being relaxation.

Maybe I could have talked about more comfortable clothing, or maybe I could have talked about eating outside, outside of restaurants, or other relaxing things. But I didn’t get there and I only talked about the beach, and why that’s relaxing, and that’s okay. Let’s try another one. This time I will take notes and give my answer in one, one minute period.

I will not stop and talk about my notes after I do them. Let’s see our question. Do you feel that music is helpful while studying? Why, or why not? Give your opinion and explain with details and examples. And I’ll have 15 seconds to prepare, starting now.

All right. And I will have 45 seconds to speak starting now. I do feel that music is generally a good idea when studying, as long as it’s instrumental music, with no singing. The words can be very difficult to can be very distracting sometimes.

Now I, I like music because it makes studying more fun. If I enjoy studying, then I, I will spend more time doing it. And more time studying means more, more learning. So it’s generally a good idea just for that reason. Besides that, if you’re listening to music on headphones, it can help you to stay focused.

I find that I don’t notice other people talking around me as much if I’m wearing headphones. Stop. Okay. I didn’t finish my last sentence. That’s okay.

That’s better than stopping with ten more seconds than being silent. This way, I continued to the end and showed that I can speak comfortably for a period of time, longer than one sentence. So I showed a couple of specific reasons that it was fun to listen to music, and that it made me enjoy studying. Also, that I wear headphones and that helps me to focus, keeps me from being distracted.

And both of those reasons were concrete, specific and explanatory. They gave clear logic, clear reasoning for my stance, for my opinion. Yes. Now it’s your turn. You’ll have, again, 15 seconds to prepare and 45 seconds to speak.

Pause the video, get a timer, and time yourself. Then, try it again. And then try it again. Practice makes perfect. That’s all.

Thank you.
