Skill Stacking

This is a big one skill stacking and it’s one of the principles that has really had a profound effect

on my life.

What is skill stacking well in the book mastery by Robert Green he mentioned that there’s three approaches

when it comes to career strategy.

One is this idea of curiosity that all masters of a craft stay in touch with their curiosity.

They’re always curious about your topic and they have this childlike ambition to learn.

The second is to value learning above all else that is choosing the opportunity that allows you to learn

the best.

Such as accepting a job because you’re going to be surrounded by people way smarter than you.

Instead of picking a job just because it has the highest salary but the third point is the most important

and that is the idea of gathering skills and combining skills in a unique way.

And that’s what skill stacking is.

Instead of getting good at one thing you want to get good and multiple things and combining them stacking

your skills in different unique ways that is unique to you.

By combining these different skills and experiences in a unique way you can create a little niche for

yourself where you’re considered one of a kind.

Because to really be a master of something to be the top in the world at something it requires a lifetime

of dedication.

For some people that’s easy but there’s only one spot in the world for a master and the truth is you

probably will never be the best in the world at any specific skill.

Not to disappoint you but there’s always going to be somebody working harder than you.

Spending more time than you.

There always be somebody with better genetic gifts than you.

Maybe even more luck.

But there is an advantage that can be had here.

Maybe you’re not the absolute best in the world but with skill stacking it’s actually more effective

to be in the top 20.

Top 10 percent in several different skills that you can stack together.

That is completely unique to you so that you can be in the 1 percent in that skill.

For example if you’re a programmer and you combine that with business skills or communication skills

that’s going to make you more valuable your skills become more valuable when you stack them on top of

one another.

The key with skill stacking is to have skills that work well together but that are also varied enough

to make you stand up.

And that’s why I always recommend to not take the most frequent path or obvious path which is usually

the worst because it doesn’t make you stand up.

Like the example that I used of a programmer with good communication presentation skills or business

logic is a lot more valuable than just a really good programmer.

And that’s the principle here.

It’s not about being the greatest one thing.

You just need to be pretty good at a list of useful skills that when combined make you truly one of

a kind.
