Question Type: Organization

Organization questions are our next question type, and they are exactly what they sound like. They ask about the organization on the lecture or conversation. Usually they’re about lectures, they ask how is the lecture structured? You only get, maybe one of these per recording, very often, you’ll have none. That means on your test, you’ll just have one, maybe two, of these total, they’re very low frequency.

In order to answer them correctly, you have to pay close attention to the structure of a lecture when you listen. So in your notes you should be thinking about examples, stories, lists, cause and effect relationships, problems and solutions, contrast and comparisons, etc. All of these are structures, relationships between ideas, which should be in your notes.

Let’s take a look at a few examples. Here is the most common one. How is the lecture organized? Well, that’s simple, isn’t it? But it might be a little bit difficult to answer if you didn’t hear the exact structure.

Here’s another: Why does the professor describe coastal weather patterns? Well, this is a little different, isn’t it? This is quite specific and it, it asks why, not how. So, isn’t this a function question? Doesn’t it look like a function question?

Well the big difference is that this asks about the function of a very large piece of the lecture. This is a, the function of an example maybe, or part of the list, or some other larger piece, some part of the big structure. So, the answer to this might be to provide an example of or something like that.

And that’s really about the relationships between ideas in a much bigger way than function questions usually ask. Usually function questions have you listen again. Organization questions don’t because there about more information and here’s another, how does the professor introduce insect reproduction. So this is another how question, how do they introduce.

So it’s, again, quite similar to, how is it organized.
